Ushio Aotsuki is the latest generation of a family whose ownership of a temple is due to a legendary story of a monster who ravaged the local countryside until one of his ancestors trapped the monster by impaling it on a stone with a magical spear, a story Ushio's father, Shigeru Aotsuki tells him constantly. Admittedly, Ushio doesn't believe a word of it, having never seen any proof of either the monster or the spear.
